The Executives’ Standpoint
On Taking Students As the summer is here, the fall is only just around the corner. With the fall comes the college students, and the membership has already been approached as to whom will take one.
The executive would like to keep you informed and up to date on this issue, on how it stands right now, and how we hope it will unfold.
The executives’ standpoint on the subject of our members taking students, is one in which we are not supporting at this time. This is not to be taken in a negative manner, in the contrary this executive strongly supports the continuing of education from the students in the classroom, to the practical field placement within our membership.
That being said however, it is also the responsibility of this executive to look out for the best interests of both the students and the Local 207 membership.
We have discussed having a PCP preceptor, a specialist in the practical training, and a program that which is outlined by the Colleges, EMS, and the Local membership as to how the student practicum unfolds. Also, we feel that both ACP and PCP preceptors should be paid fairly for their knowledge base and direction.
The executive has met with the management of the Halton Land Ambulance Service Division and is currently working on spearheading this ideal. We look forward to creating an environment that is both equally rewarding for the student, as well as for the Local 207 membership.
Please if there are any questions or concerns regarding the above mentioned contact any one of the executive of Local 207.
In Solidarity,
Seamus O’Connor
President, Local 207

http://www.caco.cupe.ca/www/caco/OMERS_Says_No_to_ParOMERS Says No to Paramedics[June 5, 2008 02:10 PM] In a vote held on June 5th, 2008 the OMERS Sponsor’s Corporation has refused to change the pension plan to allow paramedics retire early. The vote was split evenly with all of the Employer representatives voting against amending the plan to allow paramedics, like police and firefighters to negotiate normal retirement age 60 pensions. Outside the meeting, about 50 paramedics had gathered to show their support on the issue. Paramedics from places like Peterborough and Ottawa and the Toronto area distributed pamphlets and talked to people about the issue.
“We’re very disappointed about the outcome, but we’re not finished the fight” says Jeff VanPelt, who attended the rally and a is CACO Board member. “We will be meeting with our partners over the next week to decide what to do next” he says. Local 416 paramedics were upset that the City of Toronto representative on the Sponsor’s Corporation voted not to amend the plan, despite the fact that the City had made a commitment to support NRA 60 for paramedics. “This is unacceptable” says Jerry Dobson, a Toronto medic and CACO Board member. |
